ルーターとは、コンピュータネットワークにおいて、複数のネットワーク間でデータパケットを適切な宛先へ転送する通信機器である。家庭やオフィスではインターネット接続を複数のデバイスで共有するためのWi-Fiルーターとして広く普及している。ネットワークの経路制御（ルーティング）を担う中心的な役割を果たす機器である。

router は route「道筋・経路」+ -er「…するもの」。route は古フランス語を経て俗ラテン語 rupta via「切り開かれた道」に由来し、もとは「通れるようにした道」です。だから router は「進む道を決めるもの」。関連語は route, reroute。
Router is formed from route and the agent or instrument suffix -er, literally meaning something that determines or uses routes. Route entered English through French and is historically connected with Late Latin rupta, in the expression rupta via, “a broken-open road.” In computing, route became a verb for directing data along a network path, and router named the device performing that task.
