商品として売ることができる、または販売に適した状態であることを表す形容詞。法律上・品質上の問題がなく市場に出せるという意味でも、十分な状態や価値があり実際に売り物になるという意味でも使われる。中古品や修理後の商品について使われることも多い。

sell（売る）は古英語 sellan「手渡す・引き渡す」由来で、後に「金と引き換えに渡す」へ発展。sell＋形容詞語尾 -able で「売ることができる」。seller, resale も同じ sell 系で、ちゃんと市場に出せるという感覚です。
