Septicemia is a serious medical condition in which an infection spreads through the blood. It can quickly affect the whole body and become life-threatening. In modern medical use, it is often discussed together with or replaced by the term sepsis.

antiseptic（消毒の）を知っていると引っかけやすい。sept- は『感染・腐敗』の方向を示し、-emia は anemia, leukemia などと同じく『血の状態』を表す医学語尾。そこで septicemia は『血液が感染した状態』と組み立てて覚える。blood poisoning という言い換えもあり、develop septicemia, signs of septicemia のように重症感染の文脈で出やすい。sepsis と近いが、こちらは特に血流中の細菌感染を意識すると整理しやすい。

Septicemia is a modern medical Latin formation. Its first part comes from Greek septikos, meaning "causing decay," and the ending -emia comes from Greek haima, "blood," seen also in anemia and leukemia. The idea was originally of blood in a corrupted or infected state, which later became a technical medical term.
