解説 Definition
物を完全に切り離したり、つながりを断ち切ったりすることを表す動詞。ロープや電線などを物理的に切断する場合にも、契約・交渉・人間関係・外交関係などを正式に断絶する場合にも使われる。
To sever means to cut something off or separate it completely. It can be used for physical things, such as a rope or a body part, and also for non-physical things, such as a relationship or connection. It usually suggests a sudden or complete break.

severは英仏語severerを経て、ラテン語separare「引き離す」にさかのぼる語。se-「離れて」+ parare「用意する」から成り、もともと“別々にしておく”感覚なので、関係を断つ意味になる。関連語はseparate, separation。
Sever came into English through Anglo-French severer and goes back to Latin separare, meaning "to separate." It is formed from se-, "apart," and a root seen in separate and separation. The original sense was to keep things apart, which later became the stronger idea of cutting off or breaking a connection.
