subjugationは後期ラテン語 subiugatio に由来し、sub-「下に」+ iugum「くびき」+ -ation「行為」で成ります。文字通りは「くびきの下に置く」で、征服が相手を力で縛って従わせることだとわかり、同根の yoke や yoga にも「結びつける」感覚が残ります。
Subjugation comes from Late Latin subiugatio, from sub- meaning "under" and iugum meaning "yoke." The original image was of putting someone under a yoke, like an animal forced into control. That physical picture developed into the wider sense of forcing people into submission. English yoke and even yoga come from the same ancient root.
