tailgating は英語 tail「後尾」+ gate「荷台の開閉板」が合わさった語で、もとは車の後部扉まわりを指しました。そこから『相手の後ろにぴたりと付く』意味へ広がり、gatekeeper や tail-end を思うと、距離を詰める像が腑に落ちます。
