A tragedy is a very sad event that causes great suffering, damage, or death. It is often used for serious accidents, disasters, or painful personal situations. In literature, it can also mean a type of story with a sad ending.

tragedy はラテン語 tragoedia を経て、ギリシャ語 tragōidia にさかのぼり、tragos「ヤギ」+ ōidē「歌」から成ります。もとは祭礼で歌われた「ヤギの歌」とされ、そこから重い運命を描く悲劇の名になりました。関連語は tragic、ode。
Tragedy came into English through Latin tragoedia, from Greek tragōidia. The Greek word is usually explained as tragos meaning "goat" and ōidē meaning "song." It may once have referred to a ritual or festival song, and later became the name for a serious dramatic form; tragic and ode share the same roots.
