transcriptions の語源・成り立ち Etymology

transcriptions は transcription の複数形で、語源はラテン語 transcribere「書き写す」です。trans-「向こうへ・移して」+ scribere「書く」から成り、「別の形に書き移したもの」なので「転写」の意味になります。関連語に describe、manuscript があります。

Transcriptions is the regular plural of transcription, with -s pronounced /z/ after the final /n/. Transcription ultimately derives from Latin transcribere, formed from trans-, “across” or “into another place,” and scribere, “to write.” The noun suffix -tion identifies the act or result of transcribing. The word can therefore denote both the process of transferring material into written form and the texts produced by that process.
