起こる
解説 Definition
transpires は transpire(起こる、明らかになる)の三人称単数現在形です。ここでは「起こる」という意味で、出来事が実際に生じることをやや硬い表現で述べるときに使われます。
The third-person singular present form of “transpire,” meaning that an event, development, or situation occurs. In this sense, it is a relatively formal alternative to “happens.”
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 transpire「起こる」に、三人称単数現在の -s が付いた形で、語尾は /z/ と発音します。anything unusual transpires や a problem transpires のように、主語が単数の出来事で使います。happen より硬く、報告・計画・条件文で「事態が生じる」と述べる語です。
Treat transpires as the third-person singular present form of transpire: add -s, pronounced /z/ after the final voiced sound. It is used with a singular subject, as in “something unusual transpires” or “a problem transpires.” Picture a formal report describing what occurs during a test or meeting. In this sense, transpires is close to happens, but it sounds more formal and is especially natural in conditions such as “if anything transpires.” Remember that transpire can also mean “become known,” although the target use here is simply “occur.”

transpires の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 transpirare(trans-「通して」+ spirare「呼吸する」)が語源。本来は植物が水分を蒸散させる意味で、そこから「外に漏れる→明らかになる→起こる」と意味が変化した。関連語:inspire(息を吹き込む)、perspire(発汗する)。呼吸が外に通り抜けるイメージから「事が表面化する」意味になった。
Transpires comes from transpire plus the third-person singular ending -s. Transpire ultimately derives from Latin transpirare, combining trans-, “through,” with spirare, “to breathe.” Its earlier physical senses concerned moisture or vapor passing outward, as in plant transpiration. The notion of something emerging or becoming apparent later contributed to the senses “become known” and, in formal modern usage, “occur” or “happen.”
