unbalance は un-「欠く・外す」＋ balance から成る語で、balance は古フランス語 balance、さらに中世ラテン語 bilanx「二つの皿を持つはかり」に由来します。だから語の芯は「釣り合いを崩す／釣り合いがない」で、名詞では不均衡、動詞では均衡を乱す意。関連語は balance、counterbalance。
Unbalance combines un- with balance. Balance came through Old French from Medieval Latin bilanx, literally "having two scale pans." From that image of even weighing, unbalance developed the sense of removing or losing that equal state; related words include balance and counterbalance.
