unobtrusive は否定の un- と obtrusive から成り、obtrude はラテン語 ob-「前へ」+ trudere「押す」に由来する。何かが前に押し出されてくると「目立つ」ので、その否定形は「押し出てこない」つまり控えめで、intrude や extrude も同じ語根をもつ。
Unobtrusive comes from un- and obtrusive. Obtrusive is related to obtrude, from Latin ob- "forward" and trudere "to push." The idea was of something pushed forward into view, and from that it came to mean noticeable or intrusive; its negative form means not pushing itself forward, and it is related to intrude and extrude.
