obtrudeはラテン語ob-（前へ）+trudere（押す）が語源で、obtrusiveは「前に押し出してくるような」の意です。un-と-lyが付いたunobtrusivelyは「自分を前に押し出さずに」、つまり目立たぬように。intrudeやprotrudeにも同じ「押し出す」感覚が残ります。
Unobtrusively comes from unobtrusive, which goes back to Latin obtrudere, "to push forward," from ob- "toward" and trudere "to push." Obtrusive originally described something that pushes itself into view or attention. With un- and the adverb ending -ly, unobtrusively came to mean in a way that does not push itself forward.
