A valance is a short piece of cloth that hangs across the top of a window or around the edge of a bed. It is used mainly in home decoration to cover a frame or hide a space behind it.

valance は中英語 valaunce からで、おそらくアングロ・フランス語 valence、さらに avaler「下へ降ろす」に関係します。a-/ava-『下へ』の感覚が核で、avalanche も近縁。上飾りを valance というのは、『上に付くが下へ垂れる布』が原像だからです。
Valance came into Middle English from Anglo-French forms such as valance or valence. It is probably linked to a verb meaning "to let down" or "hang down." That history fits the image of cloth that drops from an upper edge. So even when a valance is placed at the top, the name points to the hanging part below.
