覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
この語義では聖書の「黙示録」、特に the Apocalypse や the Book of Revelation を指す。apo-「離して」+「覆う」に関わる語根から「覆いを外して明らかにすること」が核。現代の「世界的破局」と混同せず、read a passage from the Apocalypse の場面で覚える。
For this entry, connect apocalypse with revelation, not simply with a disaster movie. Its Greek components convey the idea of taking away a covering, so the central image is truth being unveiled. That explains why the biblical book is called the Apocalypse or the Book of Revelation: it presents visions whose meaning is disclosed through powerful symbols. Remember the classroom phrase a passage from the Apocalypse. Although lowercase apocalypse now often means a catastrophic end of the world, the capitalized title refers specifically to the final book of the New Testament in this usage.

apocalypse の語源・成り立ち Etymology
apocalypse はギリシャ語 apokalypsis がラテン語を経て入った語で、apo-「離して」+ kalyptein「覆う」から成る。もとは『覆いを外して真実を示すこと』なので黙示・黙示録の意となり、終末の大啓示という連想が強まった。関連語に apocalyptic, Calypso。
Apocalypse came through Latin from Greek apokalypsis, meaning an uncovering or revelation. The Greek noun combines apo-, “away” or “off,” with a form related to kalyptein, “to cover or conceal.” Its literal structure therefore suggests removing a covering and disclosing what was hidden. In Christian usage it became associated especially with revealed visions and with the Book of Revelation. Because that book describes judgment and cosmic upheaval, the word later acquired the broader sense of a catastrophic end.
