apocalypse はギリシャ語 apokalypsis がラテン語を経て入った語で、apo-「離して」+ kalyptein「覆う」から成る。もとは『覆いを外して真実を示すこと』なので黙示・黙示録の意となり、終末の大啓示という連想が強まった。関連語に apocalyptic, Calypso。
