An apparition is the image or appearance of a person or thing that seems ghostly, unreal, or sudden. It is often used in stories about spirits, but it can also mean any strange figure that appears unexpectedly.

apparition はフランス語を経てラテン語 apparitio に由来し、語幹は ad-「〜へ」+ parere「現れる・見える」です。「目の前にふっと現れるもの」が原義なので、人影や亡霊のような「幻影」の意味に自然につながります。appear, apparent が同根です。
Apparition came through French from Latin apparitio, from ad- "to" + parere "appear" or "come into view." The basic idea was simply something that shows itself suddenly. From that, the word came to be used especially for ghostly or striking appearances; appear and apparent share the same root.
