縁、端
解説 Definition
brink は崖や川岸、器の上部などのいちばん外側の縁や端を指す名詞です。落ちそうな場所や、液体がこぼれそうな入れ物のふちのように、境目として見える部分を具体的に述べるときに使われます。比喩ではなく、実際に見える物理的な端を表します。
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
brink は単独の和訳より、"on the brink of ..." をひとかたまりで覚えると定着しやすい語です。基本は edge に近い「端」ですが、普通の端ではなく、崖の縁のように一歩先で落ちる・大きく変わる感じを含みます。だから on the brink of collapse / war / disaster のように、危機や急変の直前で頻出します。verge も「間際」ですが、brink のほうが危険で切迫した響きが強い、と押さえると混同しにくいです。
