collation はラテン語 collatio に由来し、con-「共に」が同化した col- と、ferre「運ぶ」の過去分詞 latus が核です。collate や translate も同じ語根を持ち、もともと「別々のものを一緒に運んで並べる」ことだと思うと、照合の意味がきれいに見えます。
Collation comes from Latin collatio, from a form of con- "together" and ferre "to carry." The original idea was bringing things together, and from that it developed into comparing or arranging texts or items side by side. It is related to collate, and more distantly to words like translate, which share the same Latin root.
