collation はラテン語 collatio に由来し、con-「共に」が同化した col- と、ferre「運ぶ」の過去分詞 latus が核です。collate や translate も同じ語根を持ち、もともと「別々のものを一緒に運んで並べる」ことだと思うと、照合の意味がきれいに見えます。
Collation comes from Latin collatio, from a form of con- "together" and ferre "to carry."
