conflation はラテン語 conflare「一緒に吹きつけて溶かす」が源で、con-「共に」+ flare「吹く」から成る語です。inflate や deflate も同じ flare を持ち、別々のものが一つに溶け合って混同される感覚だと意味が腑に落ちます。
Conflation comes from the same Latin source as conflate: conflare, from con- "together" and flare "to blow." The older image is of separate things being blown or melted together into one.
