Consolidated is the past participle and adjectival form of consolidate, which entered English through Latin consolidare. That verb combines con-, meaning “together,” with solidare, “to make firm,” from solidus, “solid” or “firm.” The original image was therefore of making several elements firm together. English later extended this physical idea to the unification and strengthening of organizations, resources, accounts, and information.
