contemplate はラテン語 contemplari にさかのぼり、con-「強める」+ templ-「区切られた観察の場」と考えられます。temple や template と同系で、もとは鳥占いのため区切った空をじっと見ることから、『目の前を切り分けて見つめる』が熟考するになりました。
Contemplate comes from Latin contemplari. It is connected with templum, a space marked out for observation, especially in Roman religious practice. The earliest idea was carefully looking at a section of the sky or another marked space, and from that it developed into the broader sense of thinking deeply and attentively. It is related to temple and template.
