スペイン語 desperado は本来 desesperado で、語源はラテン語 desperare〔de-（失って）+ sperare（望む）〕です。『希望を失った者』という原義から、命知らずのならず者・無法者を指す語になりました。関連語は desperate, despair。
Desperado came into English from Spanish desperado, an older form of desesperado. It goes back to Latin desperare, from de- "away, without" and sperare "to hope."
