解説 Definition
旅人や商人を襲う強盗や武装した犯罪者をさす名詞です。人里離れた道路や山岳地帯などで略奪や恐喝をくり返す集団や個人を指すことが多く、まさに盗賊としての活動を強調します。歴史的・文学的な文脈で用いられることが多い語で、現代では比喩的に悪党や反社会的な人物を意味する場合もあります。
A bandit is a person who steals, often by using force or threats, especially outside cities or on roads. The word is common in stories, history, and descriptions of violent robbery. It has a strong old-fashioned or dramatic feeling in some contexts.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
bandit は thief よりも荒っぽく、robber や outlaw に近い「武装した盗賊」を思い浮かべると定着しやすい語です。町中のこそ泥ではなく、山道・砂漠・国境地帯で旅人や商人を襲う映画や物語の悪役のイメージで覚えるのがコツ。armed bandit, highway bandit, bandit attack のように、危険な場面と一緒に記憶すると強いです。なお one-armed bandit は俗にスロット台のことなので、意味の取り違えにも注意します。
Picture an old movie scene, not a small city thief. A `bandit` feels rough, armed, and dangerous, closer to `robber` or `outlaw` than to `thief`. Phrases like `armed bandit` and `bandit attack` make the image stick.

bandit の語源・成り立ち Etymology
bandit はイタリア語 bandito「追放された者・無法者」から来て、さらにゲルマン系の ban「布告する・追放する」にさかのぼります。ban や abandon と同根で、もとは「社会から締め出された者」だったことが、のちの「盗賊」という意味をよく説明します。
Bandit came from Italian bandito, which meant "an outlaw" or literally "a banned person." It goes back to a Germanic root seen in ban, meaning a public order or exclusion. So the word first meant someone cast out by authority, and later came to mean a robber or criminal.
