detestはラテン語detestariに由来し、de-（強意）+ testari「証人を立てる」から成ります。testimonyやattestと同じtest-系で、もとは「証人の前で公然と呪う・退ける」ことだったため、強い「嫌悪する」になりました。
Detest comes from Latin detestari. It combines de-, used here as an intensifier, with testari, "to call as a witness," which is related to testimony and attest. The earlier sense was to reject or curse something publicly and solemnly, and that strong force later became the modern sense of intense dislike.
