devaluation は de-「下へ」+ value「価値」+ -ation「こと」。value は古フランス語 valoir を経てラテン語 valere「強い・価値がある」にさかのぼり、「価値を下げる」がそのまま通貨切り下げの感覚になる。value, evaluate も同根。
