elopement は中期オランダ語 ontlopen「逃げ去る」にさかのぼり、ont-「離れて」+ lopen「走る」が核です。語尾 -ment で「行為」になり、interloper や lope と同系なので、「家や束縛から走って抜け出す」感覚が駆け落ちにつながります。
Elopement comes from elope plus the noun ending -ment. Elope goes back to Middle Dutch ontlopen, meaning "run away," built from elements meaning "away" and "run." The word first suggested escaping or slipping away, and later became especially used for running away to marry; lope and interloper are from the same family.
