enormity の語源・成り立ち Etymology
enormity はラテン語 enormis に由来し、e-/ex-「外へ」+ norma「規準・定規」からできた語。norm や normal と同根で、「基準から外れていること」が、並外れた悪事や甚大さへ広がったと見えてくる。
Enormity comes from Latin enormis, formed from e- or ex- "out of" and norma "rule" or "standard." It originally meant being outside the normal rule or measure, and norma also gave English norm and normal. From that idea, enormity came to mean a very serious wrong, and later also very great size or extent in some uses.
