Fairness is the quality of treating people equally and in a reasonable, honest way. It is often discussed in rules, decisions, competition, and social issues when people want justice and equal treatment.

fair を知っていれば覚えやすい語です。まず fair は「公正な・公平な」で、fair treatment, fair decision の形でよく出ます。そこに名詞化の -ness が付いて fairness「公平さ」。形が見えれば meaning を取りやすい語です。似た語の equality は「全員を同じにする平等」で、fairness は「状況に応じて偏りなく妥当に扱う公平さ」。unfair の反対としてセットで覚えると定着します。

fairness は fair + -ness で、fair は古英語 fæger「美しい、感じのよい、公正な」に由来する。unfair や fair-minded に同じ核があり、もとは見た目に「偏りなくきれい」なことから、公平さの意味へ伸びたと分かる。
Fairness comes from fair and the suffix -ness. Fair goes back to Old English faeger, which meant "beautiful," "pleasant," and later also "just" or "equal." The sense seems to have moved from something visually balanced and pleasing to something morally balanced and impartial. Related words include unfair and fair-minded.
