Functionalism is the idea that the value of something should be judged mainly by what it does and how useful it is. It is often used in fields like design, architecture, sociology, and psychology. In design, it usually means practical function is more important than decoration.

Functionalism is built from function, plus the suffixes -al and -ism. Function comes through French and Latin from Latin functio, from fungi, meaning "to perform" or "to carry out." The word developed the sense of a system or theory that focuses on what something does or what role it serves. Related English words include function and multifunctional.
