grandsire はアングロ・フランス語 graunt sire からで、grand「一世代上の・大きい」＋ sire「父・主君」です。sire は古フランス語を経てラテン語 senior「年長者」にさかのぼり、関連語に sir, grandchild。つまり「上の世代の父」がそのまま祖父を表す語です。
Grandsire comes from Anglo-French graunt sire, made of grand, meaning "older" or "great," and sire, meaning "father" or "lord." Sire came through Old French from Latin senior, meaning "elder," and is related to English sir. The whole word originally meant something like "the elder father," which became the sense of grandfather.
