harrowing は動詞 harrow の現在分詞形で、古英語 hergian「荒らす・略奪する」にさかのぼります。もともとは軍勢が土地を荒廃させるイメージで、そこから心をずたずたにする経験を表すようになりました。同根語に harry があります。
Harrowing comes from harrow, which goes back to Old English hergian, meaning "to ravage" or "to plunder." It first carried the image of land being violently destroyed by an attacking force. From that, it developed the emotional sense of something deeply disturbing or painful. It is related to harry.
