harrowing は動詞 harrow の現在分詞形で、古英語 hergian「荒らす・略奪する」にさかのぼります。もともとは軍勢が土地を荒廃させるイメージで、そこから心をずたずたにする経験を表すようになりました。同根語に harry があります。
