Etymology

Hobo arose in American English in the late nineteenth century, but its exact origin remains uncertain. Proposed explanations include a shortening related to “hoe-boy,” a farm laborer, and the call “ho, boy,” but neither has been conclusively established. The word became strongly associated with itinerant workers traveling along railroad routes. Later formations include hobohemia, a historical term for the communities and culture surrounding such travelers.
