中英語の geste や jeste に由来し、もとは「話」や「物語」を表す語でした。古フランス語 geste を通じて、ラテン語の gesta「行われたこと」にさかのぼります。しだいに、人を笑わせる短い話や言葉を表すようになりました。
Jest comes from Middle English geste or jeste, meaning a story or tale. It came through Old French geste from Latin gesta, meaning things done. Its meaning later became a funny remark or joke.
