lien の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 ligamen(結びつけるもの)から古フランス語 lien(絆、つながり)を経て英語に。語根 lig-(結ぶ)は ligament(靭帯)や obligation(義務)にも含まれる。財産を「縛りつける」権利という意味から先取特権の法律用語となった。

Lien entered English legal language through Anglo-French and Old French lien, meaning a bond, tie, or connection. That noun developed from Latin ligamen, “a binding,” based on ligare, “to bind.” The legal sense preserves this underlying image: a claim binds an obligation to particular property until payment or another condition is satisfied. Ligament and obligation contain historically related ideas of binding or connection.
