古ノルド語lopt（空、上階）が語源で、ゲルマン祖語*luftuz（空気）に遡る。ドイツ語Luft（空気）と同根。ヴァイキング時代に英語に入り「上の空間・屋根裏」を意味するようになった。関連語：aloft（高所に）、lift（持ち上げる）。空気＝上方という発想から屋根裏の意味が生まれた。
