manikin はオランダ語 manneken『小さな男』に由来し、man『人・男』に指小辞 -ken が付いた語です。man や mannequin と同根で、もとは『小さな人の姿』という感覚なので、人体模型やマネキンの意味がそのまま腑に落ちます。
