地質学における岩石変成作用。高温・高圧の環境下で既存の岩石が化学的・物理的に変化する過程を指す。
Metamorphism is the process by which rock changes because of heat, pressure, or chemical activity inside the Earth. The rock does not fully melt, but its structure or minerals become different. This is a technical geology term.

metamorphosis（変身）を知っていると覚えやすい語。核は morph「形が変わる」で、metamorphism も「別の形へ変わること」と捉えるとよい。ただし生物の変態ではなく、地質では rock undergoes metamorphism のように岩石が熱や圧力で性質まで変わる場面で使う。melting（溶ける）ではなく、固体のまま変わる点が重要。morphism を見たら「形・構造の変化」に結びつけると定着しやすい。
