解説 Definition
数量や程度が今ある基準より大きいことを示す比較語。名詞の前では「より多くの」、形容詞・副詞の前では「もっと」となり、追加・増加・比較を表す。thanと組んで差を示すほか、some moreやno moreのように単独でも頻出し、会話では丁寧な依頼や確認にも使われる。

古英語māraに由来し、さらに古いゲルマン祖語の比較形へさかのぼる。muchやmanyの比較級として定着した基本語で、ドイツ語mehrなどとも遠い同系関係にある。英語の比較表現の中心となる語の一つ。
