Plausibility means the quality of seeming reasonable, believable, or likely to be true. It is often used when judging an explanation, story, or argument. Something can have plausibility even if it is not fully proven.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
plausibility は形で覚えると残りやすい語です。まず plausible「もっともらしい」を押さえ、語尾の -ity で「性質」になって「もっともらしさ」。possible が「ありうる」、probable が「たぶんそう」、plausible は「話として筋が通っていて信じられそう」という感触です。test/check the plausibility の形で見かけやすく、真偽そのものより『説明に無理がないか』を見る語。probability とつづりが似るので、plaus- は『もっともらしい話』側と切り分けると混同しにくいです。
Start from `plausible`, then add `-ity` to make the noun. `Possible` means it can happen, `probable` means it is likely, but `plausible` means it sounds reasonable and easy to believe. So `plausibility` is about whether an explanation feels believable. Watch out for `probability`, which looks similar but is about chance, not a convincing story.
