ギリシャ語 psychikos「魂・心の」に由来し、psych-（心・魂）+ -ic（〜に関する）でできています。語根は psyche「息・生命」で、psychology や psyche と同根。見えない心や魂に関わるものから、名詞では「霊能者」の意味になりました。
Psychic comes from Greek psychikos, meaning "of the soul or mind," from psyche, "breath, life, soul." In English, it first described things connected with the mind or soul. Later, it also came to mean things believed to go beyond normal physical laws, and as a noun it developed the sense of "a person with spiritual powers."
