redirection は re-「戻って」+ direct「まっすぐ導く」+ -ion から成り、direct はラテン語 dirigere「導く」に由来します。進路を向け直すことが原義なので、direction や director を思うと、別の場所へ導く意味が部品どおりに見えます。
