sashay はフランス語 chassé「舞踏の横滑りのステップ」の変形で、さらに chasser「追う」にさかのぼります。もとはダンスの足運びを指したため、英語では「横へ滑るように進む」感覚から「気取って歩く」という意味へ広がりました。関連語は chassé、chase です。
Sashay came into English from a changed form of French chassé, a sideways sliding step in dancing. Chassé comes from French chasser, "to chase" or "drive." Because it first named a dance movement, the word later widened to mean moving in a smooth, showy, or confident way. It is related in origin to chase.
