sectoral は sector に -al「…に関する」が付いた語で、sector はラテン語 secare「切る」に由来します。section や dissect と同根で、もとは「切り分けられた部分」だから、「部門別・分野別」という意味が、全体を切って区分した姿から自然に理解できます。
Sectoral comes from sector plus the adjective ending -al. Sector goes back to Latin secare, meaning "to cut," the same root seen in section and dissect. Because a sector is a part cut out from a whole, sectoral came to mean relating to a particular division, branch, or field.
