stalemate はチェス語で、stale＋mate から成る語です。ここで stale は現代の「古い」でなく、アングロ・フランス語 estal(er) 由来の「動けない位置・停止」を表し、mate は checkmate の mate。つまり「詰みではないが動けない」から転じて「手詰まり」です。関連語に stall、checkmate。
