ストッキング

解説 Definition

ストッキングとは、足と脚を覆う薄手の伸縮性のある衣料品で、主にナイロンやシルクなどの素材で作られる。また、クリスマスにプレゼントを入れるために暖炉に吊るす大きな靴下型の袋も指す。

A close-fitting garment covering the foot and usually part or most of the leg, traditionally made from a thin or knitted material. It can also mean a large sock-shaped container hung up to receive small gifts at Christmas.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

英語の stocking は、脚を覆う長い靴下を一足の片方として数える語で、a stocking、a pair of stockings と言う。sheer stockings「薄手の長靴下」、a run in a stocking「伝線」という連語が実用的。さらに Christmas stocking は贈り物を入れて吊るす靴下型の袋。日本語の「ストッキング」より意味が広く、複数なら stockings になる点も覚える。

Learn stocking through two familiar scenes. In clothing, one stocking covers one foot and leg, so a complete pair is a pair of stockings. Common combinations include sheer stockings and a run in a stocking, meaning a line caused by damaged fabric. At Christmas, a stocking is also the sock-shaped container hung near a fireplace for small presents. This English word is broader than the Japanese loanword ストッキング, which usually suggests thin women’s hosiery. Do not confuse a stocking with tights or pantyhose, which join both legs into one waist-high garment.

例文

子供たちはプレゼントを期待してクリスマスイブに暖炉のそばにストッキングを吊るした。

stocking の語源・成り立ち Etymology

英語 stock(丸太・幹)に指小辞 -ing が付いた語。16世紀頃は脚を覆う衣類全般を指し、木の幹のように脚を包むものが原義。同根語: stock(蓄え・幹)、stockade(柵)。靴下からナイロン製の長靴下へと意味が変遷した。

Stocking developed in English from stock, a word that could refer to a stump, trunk, or similarly shaped object, with the suffix -ing. By the sixteenth century, it denoted a close-fitting covering for the leg, at a time when such garments could cover much more of the lower body than a modern sock. Its meaning later narrowed toward long hose worn on the foot and leg, while Christmas stocking developed from the custom of using a sock to receive gifts.
