体の内部を断層的に画像化する医療技術。CTスキャンなどで用いられ、臓器や組織の断面を撮影する方法。
Tomography is a medical imaging method that creates detailed pictures of the inside of the body in thin sections or layers. It is used in scans such as CT or PET to help doctors examine organs and tissues. The term is mainly used in medicine and scientific fields.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
photo / photography の -graphy を知っていれば、「画像として記録する技術」の仲間だと見抜きやすい語です。医療では CT scan = computed tomography とセットで覚えるのが実用的。-graphy は撮影法・検査法、-gram はできた画像で、tomogram が断層画像、tomography がその撮影法。angiography や mammography も同じ型。topography とつづりが少し似るので、m が入るほうが医療の断層、と区別すると残りやすいです。
If you know `photography`, the ending `-graphy` already tells you it is a recording or imaging method. The practical memory hook is `CT = computed tomography`. Also notice the pattern: `tomography` is the method, while `tomogram` is the image produced. Be careful not to mix it up with `topography`, which looks similar but is a different word.

tomography はギリシャ語 tomo-「切片」と -graphy「記録」から成り、文字通りは「断面を記すこと」です。atom や anatomy と同じ「切る」語根を含むので、体を切らずに断面として見る技術だと考えると意味が鮮明です。
