trailing は trail「引きずる・後をついていく」に名詞化の -ing が付いた語です。trail は古フランス語 trailler、さらにラテン語 trahere「引く」にさかのぼり、「引っぱられて後ろに残る」感覚から「後続」の意味が生まれました。関連語に tractor、attract があります。
Trailing is formed from trail plus the suffix -ing. Trail entered English through Old French trailler, “to tow or drag,” and is ultimately associated with Latin trahere, “to pull or draw.” The older image of something being dragged behind developed naturally into the senses of following at the rear and extending in a line.
