warring の語源・成り立ち Etymology

warring は war に -ing が付いた形で、語源の war は古フランス語 werre / guerre、さらにフランク語系 *werra「争い・混乱」にさかのぼります。もとは「ごたごたした争い」の感覚で、そこから「戦っている」が自然に生まれ、関連語に warrior、warfare があります。

Warring is formed from war with the present-participle suffix -ing and a doubled final r. War entered English through Old North French werre, a form related to French guerre, and ultimately comes from a Germanic source reconstructed with the sense “confusion” or “strife.” The participial form literally describes people or groups carrying on war and later extended naturally to severe nonmilitary conflict.
