古英語 hwisprian「そっと話す」に由来する擬音的な語です。息だけで出るかすかな音の感触が、動詞「ささやく」と名詞「ささやき」の両方に残っています。
Whisper comes from Old English hwisprian, which meant "to speak softly." It is probably imitative in origin, copying the faint breathy sound of soft speech. That sense remains in both the verb and the noun today.
