adjournment は古フランス語 ajorner「日を改める」が語源で、a-「〜へ」+ jorn「日」から成ります。journal や journey も同じラテン語 diurnum「一日」にさかのぼり、会を「別の日に回す」感覚が休会につながります。
`Adjournment` comes from Old French `ajorner`, meaning "to put off until another day." The word is built on a root meaning "day," the same source seen in `journal` and, more distantly, `journey`.
