解説 Definition
anecdote は、実際の人物や出来事、個人の経験についての短い「逸話」です。面白い小話として語られることが多く、会話やスピーチ、文章で論点を具体的に伝えるためにも使われます。
An anecdote is a short, usually interesting or amusing account of a real person, event, or personal experience. It is often used in conversation, speeches, or writing to illustrate a broader point or make an idea easier to understand.
使い方 Usage
- tell an anecdote about ... で「…についての逸話を話す」。可算名詞で、単数形は an anecdote、複数形は anecdotes です。 Use tell an anecdote about ... to introduce its subject. It is countable: an anecdote in the singular and anecdotes in the plural.
- begin with an anecdote は「逸話から始める」。話や文章の冒頭で具体的な小話を紹介するときに使います。 Begin with an anecdote means opening a talk or piece of writing with a short, concrete story.

- joke は主に笑わせるための話。anecdote は実際の人物や経験に結び付く逸話で、論点を伝える目的でも使います。 A joke mainly aims to make people laugh. An anecdote concerns a real person or experience and may also illustrate a point.

フランス語anecdoteを経て、ギリシャ語anekdota「未刊のものたち」に由来する。an-「否定」+ ek-「外へ」+ dotos「与えられた・公表された」で、もとは未公開の話、そこから「逸話」になった。関連語はedition、editor。
